Happy Friday!

1.  Working on:  Creating a “straw man” list for ExTeam of ideas for smallish, affordable technology, collections, or facilities projects that we can accomplish this spring and summer. This is the time campus facilities wants to know what will be in their summer queue. As new directions are emerging from the architects’ study, we’re better able to see how to align our building projects with their vision.  Example: renovating the CTLT space on the 2nd floor after CTLT’s move to the 3rd floor.  (I’m using “straw man” in the sense of putting an idea out there to inspire better ones – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man_proposal).

2.  Excited about:  The SLAC survey and the Ithaka survey – both went out over the last week, to students and faculty respectively.  What a way to learn from our community about how they work, and what they need from their library.  If you haven’t already read Andrew Bui’s nice blog piece on the SLAC survey, check it out:  http://lib.calpoly.edu/outloud/2014/02/04/you-define-the-ultimate-library-experience/

3.  Thinking (learning) about:  I’m in Davis this morning, at a small conference hosted by the UC Davis Provost and the UCD library, about changing options in scholarly and scientific communication.  Most of the speakers here are activists and researchers, and a major topic is whether traditional peer review makes for good science.  Are there better ways to share and build science?  I’m learning and thinking about new models for peer review, including open peer review and post-publication open evaluation (check out PLOS Labs, http://www.ploslabs.org/openevaluation/).  I’ll share more notes when I get back.

Have a Happy Valentine’s Day with your friends, families, and loved ones, and have a wonderful weekend.
